Uni of ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø launches new commercialisation platform

The University of ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø today announced a new platform to accelerate innovation and commercialisation of its research findings.

A newly recruited business development team, ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø Commercial, will license research applications, generate spin-out companies and manage intellectual property on behalf of the University.

“ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø Commercial will increase impact from the translation of research into commercial outcomes, and help drive the State's economic development,” said Professor Warren Bebbington, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø.

“And that means more jobs for South Australia.”

The platform follows an external review of the University’s commercial arm, ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø Research and Innovation (ARI).

“ARI’s current capacity to manage contract research, consulting activities and support research grants, will be transferred into the University,” said Professor Bebbington. “This will allow us to make the most of new commercialisation opportunities more easily while maintaining our current research activity.”

ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø Commercial is expected to commence in January 2016.

“We’re well aware of the State Government’s interest in improving economic conditions through better research outcomes,” said Professor Bebbington. “ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø Commercial will enable us to respond more nimbly and flexibly to new opportunities that surface from our discussions with entrepreneurs to create new businesses.”

The University of ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø ranks third in the Group of Eight and fourth nationally in commercialisation and contract research income and it generated $41.5 million in 2014.

The University of ÑÇÖÞ²ÊƱ¹ÙÍø has world class research expertise in many areas, including advanced manufacturing, engineering, agriculture, defence and security, energy and mining, environment, and health.
